Description and services

Solar Pie is a Seattle-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to raising public awareness and accelerating the acceptance of solar energy as a safe, clean, and renewable power source. The organization was founded after Scott and Carolyn Sherwood installed an 18-panel solar roof on their 1907 Seattle home and discovered the substantial amount of electricity it produced, inspiring them to spread the word about solar’s potential, even in notoriously cloudy climates. Their initial high-profile demonstration was a partnership with PEMCO Insurance to install solar panels atop the company’s headquarters, which publicly displayed the generated kilowatt-hours to thousands of daily commuters on I-5, successfully proving solar’s viability in the Northwest.

The organization’s goal is to facilitate building a network of visible solar demonstration roofs in every major American city and publicize the amount of power generated by all those roofs nationwide to show how effective solar energy can be. Solar Pie engages corporate partners to build and leverage the visibility of this network. Citizens are encouraged to get involved by becoming a member—joining an alliance of solar energy supporters—by signing up for the organization’s newsletter to stay informed and help advocate for a positive energy future.
