Solar 1
Description and services
Solar One is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization based in Manhattan, New York City, with a mission to design and deliver innovative education, training, and technical assistance. Its central goal is to foster sustainability and resiliency, particularly in diverse urban environments like the NYC metro area. Solar One works to empower learning that changes how people think about energy, sustainability, and resilience, helping individuals and communities explore new, adaptive ways of living and working in a climate-change impacted world. The organization focuses its efforts on four main areas: environmental education, green workforce training, urban ecology, and clean energy development.
Solar One achieves its mission through several key programs, including the Green Design Lab, a K-12 environmental STEM education program, and the Green Workforce Training program, which provides technical training and industry-recognized certifications for un- and under-employed adults in fields like energy efficiency and solar installation. Through its Here Comes Solar program, the organization facilitates access to solar energy, having developed over 1,000 solar projects in New York’s underserved market segments, primarily on multifamily affordable housing. Solar One also manages the Stuyvesant Cove Park, a resilient green space in Lower Manhattan, and is an implementation partner for NYSERDA’s Clean Energy Communities program, all aimed at advancing environmental equity and a clean energy economy.
