New York Solar Program
Description and services
The New York Solar Program, commonly known as NY-Sun, is a key statewide initiative administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Its primary objective is to make solar-generated electricity more affordable and accessible for New York homeowners, renters, and businesses. It achieves this by providing a comprehensive network of qualified installers, financial incentives, and low-interest financing options. The program’s overarching aim is to encourage widespread adoption of solar electricity to reduce energy costs across the state and enhance the reliability and efficiency of the electric grid.
NY-Sun offers a range of financial mechanisms, including the Megawatt Block Solar Incentive which divides funding across state regions, and various low-interest loans like On-Bill Recovery and PACE loans. Beyond on-site installation, the program heavily promotes Community Solar, allowing utility customers (including renters) to subscribe to offsite solar arrays and receive bill credits, supporting New York’s goal to achieve 10 GW of solar by 2030. The state leads the U.S. in community solar capacity, demonstrating the program’s success in facilitating the transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
