Blue Shield of California is a nonprofit mutual benefit corporation and health plan, founded in 1939 by the California Medical Association. Its mission is to ensure that all Californians have access to high-quality health care at an affordable price, a goal it pursues while maintaining values of being human, honest, and courageous. Now headquartered in Oakland, the organization serves nearly 6 million members and works with a network of over 65,000 physicians across the state. As an independent member of the Blue Shield Association, the health plan employs over 6,500 people and reports more than $27 billion in annual revenue.

The company provides a wide array of insurance solutions, including health maintenance organizations (HMOs), preferred provider organizations (PPOs), dental, vision, Medicare, and Medicaid (Medi-Cal) plans for individuals and businesses. Blue Shield of California is recognized for innovation, particularly for its nationally known Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) which partner with providers to manage quality and cost of care. It is also the only health plan to offer home-based palliative care in all 58 California counties.
